Description
Very easy to grow and super fragrant, the Wilhelm Schacht Daphne is a hybrid that produces abundant rounded bouquets of highly fragrant bright purple flowers in spring repeating throughout the season when happy where growing. Narrow, dark green leaves on a dense mound to 18 inches tall and wide serve as the perfect backdrop to really make the flowers pop. Wilhelm Schacht is even more drought tolerant than other Daphne, so make sure to choose a well-drained site. Also note that Daphne does not like its roots disturbed, so carefully choose a permanent home for it in your landscape. A superstar of a shrub for smaller garden spaces!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense, rounded mound 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, the Wilhelm Schacht Daphne is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural evergreen hedge in shady to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. it’s smaller size lends well to smaller garden spaces. Excellent evergreen shrub for use under the canopies of large shade trees. Plant it near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, purple theme gardens, Asian gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  12 to 15 inches apart for solid hedges;  3 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this hybrid Daphne variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, it’s not the easiest plant to grow in containers, much preferring growing in the ground. But hey, with tender loving care it can be done. Most importantly, choose a non-glazed pot with a drainage hole(s) at the bottom. To avoid clogging of the drainage hole line the bottom of the pot with a porous landscape weed fabric.
Growing Preferences
Despite the remarkable variety of gardening myths about its requirements, Daphne is very hardy and easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot.
The Wilhelm Schacht Daphne grows best in rich, sandy-humusy, well-drained slightly moist soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5 pH). Good soil drainage is essential as a constantly soggy soil ensures death of the plant. In heavy clay soil that doesn’t drain well it’s a good idea to plant in raised mound to ensure proper drainage. Grows in full sun or shade. Morning and evening sun with some shade or filtered sun during the mid-afternoon hours would be ideal.
CAUTION: Daphne do not like their roots to be disturbed so make sure before planting to pick its permanent home!
