Description

If you’re into the quirky and unusual, meet ‘Whipcord’, an Arborvitae that looks like no other. Instead of the flat, fan-like sprays of our native western arborvitae, Whipcord sports a hairdo of thin, cord-like branches that resemble a mop of dreadlocks. What’s truly amazing is that Whipcord originated from a chance seedling among a grove of western cedar trees in Oregon, which grow similar to giant sequoias and redwoods. But all grown up Whipcord grows in a mound to only 4 or 5 feet tall and wide! What are the odds of that? While most folks don’t have room for a giant tree, Whipcord Arborvitae fits nicely into smaller gardens and landscape spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing only 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, the quirky Whipcord Arborvitae is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller gardens or in grouping in larger landscape spaces. It also is really nice as a solo in tall pots where it does a spectacular job of showing off its “hairdo.” A fine addition to oddity gardens, conifer gardens, rock gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  3.5 to 4 feet  apart for solid hedge; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Arborvitae are very easy to grow and care for. They are adaptable to many soil types including red clay and like full sun to part shade. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and don’t like an overly dry site. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required.

Questions? Contact Us!

I was looking for a special plant for a special pot that can be seen from our patio and bedroom. Found it! The Whipcord Arborvitae makes people look twice, smile, and ask questions. When we lived in Florida, we had a Mexican Cycad in the pot – a male Mexican cycad. Because there were no female Mexican cycads anywhere near us, we called him Lonesome George. When we moved to North Carolina in February 2023, we brought the pot with us. (George wouldn’t survive in zone 7b so we planted it in the ground in Florida.) Now the Whipcord is in George’s pot. But, the Whipcord doesn’t look like a ”George” to me. So, I’ve named him Wilson in honor of the Wilson Brothers and their incredible gardens.———————————————————Wow, that’s very cool! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
