Vilmorin’s Dwarf Cryptomeria (Japanese Cedar) – 1 Gallon Pot

Named for Philip De Vilmorin, a Frenchman who discovered this gem in Japan in 1904, Vilmorin’s Dwarf Cryptomeria, commonly called Japanese Cedar, is a captivating little evergreen that forms a globe to 3 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up. Its smaller stature makes it a perfect fit as an accent in small garden spaces or in containers, where its a good candidate for bonsai. Also nice in groupings or as a low hedge where space is limited and looks especially nice around rocks and boulders. It features fuzzy olive-green foliage that turns to bronzy orange during winter, which gives it year round appeal in the garden. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, the color, feel and form of this Japanese Cedar makes it an extra special addition to any sunny to lightly shaded garden.

Growing to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Vilmorin’s Dwarf Cryptomeria is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces or groupings or as a hedge where space allows in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It does very well in pots, planters and other containers, even for bonsai. In pots or the ground, two can be used to frame an entrance. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens, Bonsai gardens, and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2 feet apart for solid hedges; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants

Vilmorin’s Cryptomeria is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Prefers not to dry out when young however is quite drought tolerant when established. That said, during prolonged periods of drought it will appreciate an occasionally deep soaking. The plant never needs pruning except to remove a stray or damaged branchlet. We’ve seen no serious disease or insect problems and the deer that visit our gardens won’t touch it. Can be pruned for size control or shaping purposes though we never touch ours.
