Description
An exceptionally easy-to-grow North American native perennial, the Vanilla Cream Baptisia features tall lupine-like spikes of pastel yellow buds that open to creamy white pea-shaped flowers the butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators will appreciate. Immediately following the flowers seed pods begin to develop that eventually turn charcoal-black. These pods are excellent for dried flower arrangements and kids love them because when shaken the seeds rattle in the pods. The plant takes on an appealing vase shape with stems clothed in new foliage that emerges a beautiful bronze color in spring maturing to grey-green. Low maintenance, drought tolerance, deer resistance and heat and cold resistance makes Vanilla Cream a superb choice in garden beds or large containers.
Vanilla Cream is a selection from the Decadence Series bred by Hans Hansen that are made from crosses with the many native Baptisia species he has collected across Texas and Oklahoma. These crosses have resulted in an array of seedlings with unique flower colors and plant habits, the best of which are introduced into the DECADENCE® Series.
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 2.5 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 3.5 feet wide, Vanilla Cream Baptisia is ideal for use an accent or grouping in perennial and meadow gardens and even landscape borders. Its upright growth habit and vase shape serves well as a centerpiece or vertical accent in garden beds or larger container gardens. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, white theme gardens, meadow gardens, cottage gardens and low water needs gardens.
Growing Preferences
Vanilla Cream Baptisia is very easy to grow in a moist or dry but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours or more of sunlight for best flowering. Tolerates poor soils and is very drought tolerant when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Plants can be cut back near the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
