Description

Discovered as a chance seedling in the great state of Texas, ‘Traveller’ is a mounding and distinctive weeping Redbud variety with zig-zag branches that cascade to the ground like a waterfall. The result is very interesting shapes and forms reaching 5 to 6 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide with no two specimens looking identical. In early spring the bare  branches and stems are covered in clusters of fuchsia-pink, sweet pea-like flowers that are followed by attractive red seed pods through summer. Immediately following the bloom the heart-shape leaves emerge a coppery color transitioning to thick, leathery, glossy, rich green leaves that literally clothe the entire tree. The thick leaves are more heat, humidity and drought resistant than other redbud varieties. Fall foliage color is usually a mix of yellow and orange to copper shades. A very easy-to-grow North American native that thrives in almost any well-drained soil, Traveller is a wonderful specimen for a small space garden, home foundation planting, sunny or partially shaded woodland borders or even in large containers. You might be happy to know that the deer turn their nose up to this one.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide, the Traveller Weeping Redbud is ideal for use as a focal specimen in small garden spaces and around the home. Where space allows in can be planted in spaced groupings at 12 feet or more apart. Also nice to accentuate or frame an entryway with two. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, native plant gardens, pollinator gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  Best as specimen or in spaced groupings at 12 feet or more apart. Two can be used to frame an entryway
Growing Preferences

The Traveller Weeping Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun or part shade. We suggest at least 3 hours of direct sunlight per day or all-day lightly filtered sun. It is quite drought tolerant when established only needing supplemental water in a prolonged summer drought. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. No pruning is necessary however selective pruning can be done for shaping purposes or size control.
