Description
Prized for its abundant flowers, berries and attractive foliage, Red Balloon is a semi-deciduous hybrid Lantanaphyllum Viburnum reaching 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide. The distinguished, handsome thick and leathery leaves emerge copper-bronze in spring turning to a rich forest-green by summer and deep purple-maroon in mid to late fall well into winter. In spring, it features abundant dome-shaped clusters of slightly scented pretty white flowers up to 5 inches across. In summer, equally abundant showy rounded clusters of brilliant red berries are displayed, hence ‘balloon’ in the name. Berry production is good without a pollinator, though using ‘Mohican’ and/or ‘Alleghany’ as a companion pollinator will enhance berry production. Red Balloon forms an arching rounded shrub 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, which makes for an attractive specimen in sunny or shady smaller garden spaces or groupings or a hedge where space allows. A fine choice for attracting butterflies and birds to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer and we’ve seen no problems with insects or disease.
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, Red Balloon Viburnum is ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings in landscape, woodland and flowering shrub borders. Also a nice accent in home foundation plantings. Can be trained to form a multi-stemmed small tree. A fine addition to native plant gardens, bog gardens, bird gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Red Balloon Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained moderately to slightly acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil rich in organic matter. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds well to pruning immediately after flowering but doing so will remove berries. Therefore we suggest planting in a spot where it can be allowed to grow to full size with no pruning needed except to remove a stray or broken branch.
