An improved selection that is faster growing, resistant to tip blight, and holds its color well throughout the winter with less bronzing than other cultivars, ‘Radicans’ Cryptomeria, commonly called Japanese Cedar, is a tall growing coniferous evergreen tree with dense, soft and attractive blue-green feathery foliage and pyramidal growth habit to 40 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Its stature makes it a fine selection for use in privacy screen plantings or to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings. Very easy to grow and virtually no maintenance!

Growing to 40 feet tall and about 15 feet wide, Radicans Cryptomeria is most often used in single or staggered rows for screen plantings, however, it also makes a nice specimen tree in larger landscapes and a corner plant to frame in tall homes and other buildings. It grows well in large containers when young but eventually will need to be transplanted to the landscape. A fine addition to Asian-themed and conifer gardens.

Spacing:  12-15′ for solid screens;  22′ + for space between trees

Radicans Cryptomeria is very easy to grow and virtually no maintenance. It is adaptable to many soil types preferring a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. As with many other ornamental trees it does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, nor an always dry one, though trees have good drought tolerance when well established. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best performance. Feed in spring with a well-balanced shrub and tree food that contains iron. No pruning will be necessary.
