Description

The state symbol and state tree of Ohio, hence the name, the Ohio Buckeye is very attractive with 4 season appeal. It is a neatly rounded tree with sweeping branches and dense foliage that provides deep shade. One of the first trees to leaf out in the spring and the leaves turn pleasing shades of yellow, orange and sometimes red in fall. Its name comes from a small, dark brown nut with a light patch resembling the eye of a deer, which grows inside a showy, rounded and prickly fruit capsule. As with other buckeyes, erect clusters of golden flowers are held at the ends of the twigs in spring. Corky grey bark provides winter interest in the landscape.

Interesting Notes
Pioneers carried a buckeye seed in their pockets to ward off rheumatism. The wood is used for furniture, boxes, flooring, and musical instruments.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 25 to 40 feet tall and equally as wide, the Ohio Buckeye is ideal for use as a shade tree or in groupings in landscape or woodland borders. Also nice for use in parks. A fine addition to North American native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, woodland gardens and yellow theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 50+ feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Ohio Buckeye is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance free when planted right and in the right spot. It grows well in most any consistently moist but well drained soil of average to high fertility and sun or part sun. Young plants prefer consistently moist soil. Mature plants will tolerate short periods of drought.
