Description
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’, what we call Maiden Grass and others might call Eulalia Grass, is a gracefully arching, fine-textured ornamental grass that will form majestic, finely textured, fountain-shaped, vertical accents in your landscape. The slender green blades of Morning Light are vertically striped with ivory-white variegation creating a wonderful silver look from a distance. The foliage is flexible and blows easily in the wind, turning a rich gold in the fall and persisting through winter. In mid to late summer, pinkish-red seed “wands” rise above the 5-6 foot tall clumps on thin but sturdy stems. In early fall these open to fluffy, curled silvery-white flowers that persist through winter. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, Morning Light Maiden Grass forms a neat, upright, gracefully arching clump that provides outstanding texture in the landscape. It can be useful as a specimen, in small to large groupings, or as a grassy hedge anywhere in the sunny landscape. This is one grass that we use quite often as an accent in home foundation plantings. It can also be grown as a stand alone or mixed with other plants in large containers and pots.

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Miscanthus grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Miscanthus grasses are easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay and full to mostly sun (6 hours or more direct sunlight per day). They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility while establishing themselves, however will tolerate periods of dry soil when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure the planting site is a well-drained one. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.

Even in the middle of summer, my madien grass arrived in perfect condition and was undamaged. The gallon size is perfect, not too small, not too large and I can’t wait to see how it looks next year. My obsession this year has been grasses and Wilson Bros Gardens has a great collection. The quality of your plants is amazing and I find myself returning to your site again and again for the plant descriptions and growing instructions, and, of course, to purchase. When I order from you, I know I will receive a healthy, vigorous plant, no matter when I order. Thank you!————————————We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the kind words and great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
The grasses arrived in good shape, well packaged, and quickly.—————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Ordered 4 containers of Pampas Grass, my First time to ever order plants online. Well I have have already ordered more from Wilson Bros. The Packaging was Awesome, the grass is growing strong.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I have several grasses from you including the Muhlenbergia capillaris, pink muhly, which I saw on the Outer Banks, but thought I could never have. I now have 3 plus a Pennisetum alopecuroides, ‘Moudry’, and a Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’. When you have the Yellow Bird Magnolia back in stock, it will go in the middle of the triangle where the 3 white pines were cut, with grasses around. Yellow Bird is a hybrid with our native Magnolia acuminate. We had one of the cucumber trees, but it was too close to the porch and I had to have it cut about 20 years ago. I am also awaiting your restocking of The Rising Sun Redbud Tree. The plants arrived in beautiful condition.——————————Thanks so much for your review. Let us know if there’s ever anything we can help you with. – Beth | WBG
I received my order two days ago. Those grasses were expensive, but WOW! They arrived in perfect condition, and they’re gorgeous. Worth every penny! I’ll be back for my next hard-to-find plants.————————————————————Hi Jacquelyn, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Morning Light Maiden Grass. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words!
