Description
‘Mini Penny’ is another fine introduction by Michael Dirr of the University of Georgia Research Foundation. It was obtained from a seedling of an open-pollinated Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Penny Mac’, which was named after Penny McHenry, a founder of the American Hydrangea Society. Growing only 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, ‘Mini Penny’ is a dwarf mophead hydrangea that produces loads of pink or blue blooms, depending on soil pH. You can expect blue flowers in acid soil and pink flowers in neutral soil. You’ll be happy to know that ‘Mini Penny’ is a repeat bloomer that produces flowers on both old and new wood and has excellent mildew resistance on leathery, dark green leaves. The blooms are carried on strong stems making them great for fresh or dried cut flower arrangements. So make sure to plant one in your cut flower garden!

Landscape & Garden Uses
A dwarf growing only 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in a rounded mound, Mini Penny Hydrangea is an ideal selection for an accent in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plants and flowering shrub borders. In larger spaces it is most impressive grouped in clusters or as a dramatic, colorful, natural hedge. It’s smaller size makes it especially suitable for pots and other containers that can be situated on patios, decks, porches and other outdoor outdoor living spaces.

How Many Plants Needed To Cover A Planting Area?

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Hydrangea is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences
Mini Penny Hydrangea is very easy to grow in average, moist but well-drained soil. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Plants will tolerate full sun in northern zones however appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in southern zones. We recommend at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering.

Note:  Pruning method for Mini Penny is the same as with Endless Summer and other reblooming Hydrangeas. Mini Penny is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its first round of flowers during the current season from buds formed on “old wood” (during the previous year). This means that even though it is tempting to cut them back in the winter, when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don’t do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don’t cut them off if you want flowers.
