Description
A lovely late-season surprise heralding the arrival of the holiday season, Harvest Moon is a native Witch Hazel that begins flowering around Thanksgiving and the harvest moon, a time when not much else, other than late-flowering Camellia sasanqua varieties, is blooming in the landscape. Providing fuller flowers and a much heavier display over a longer period from late fall through the winter months, the fragrant, ribbon-like fringe flowers are of a brilliant lemon-yellow color, standing out remarkably well on the bare stems and branches. The leaves emerge a reddish bronze in spring turning to green and then shades of golden yellow and bronze before dropping in mid fall to allow the flowers to take the stage. At 15 to 18 feet tall but only 10-12 feet wide when all grown up, its narrower habit is a better fit for smaller spaces than other varieties. You can allow it to grow naturally as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree. Grows well in full sun or shade and everything between, but will be smaller in size with more shade. A beautiful large shrub or small tree that will always have you looking forward to the holiday season, the Harvest Moon Witch Hazel is a super hardy native providing a unique choice for screening and naturalized plantings or as an understory plant in woodland settings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 18 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide, the Harvest Moon Witch Hazel can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural tall hedge. As the shrub grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree that serves well as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundations. A fine addition to flowering shrub borders, yellow theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedge; 16 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Harvest Moon Witch hazel is very easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to shade. It will be smaller in size with more shade. It prefers a moist acidic soil rich in organic matter but also grows well in clay soils, though we suggest amending heavy clay to ensure good drainage. Little if any pruning is required but responds well to it for shaping purposes or tree forming.
