Description
A wonderful hardy ornamental grass, Flame Grass puts on a spectacular show in fall when its handsome, fine-textured, gracefully arching green foliage turns fiery shades of red and orange. What’s more, in mid to late summer magenta flower wands tower above the foliage turning to fluffy white plumes as the season progresses, setting off the vibrant fall foliage. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements. The slender grassy blades originate in a clump, spreading out and up like a fountain to 4.5 feet tall in bloom and only 3 to 3.5 feet wide. Though not considered a dwarf, Flame Grass makes for a lovely vertical accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in showy groupings or natural hedges where space allows. One of our favorites!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4to 5 feet tall and 3 to 3.5 feet wide, Flame Maiden Grass forms a neat, upright, gracefully arching clump that provides outstanding texture in the landscape. It can be useful as a specimen in smaller garden spaces, a vertical accent in container gardens, or small to large groupings on natural hedges anywhere in the sunny landscape where space allows. This is one grass that we use quite often as an accent in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  3′ apart for a solid hedge; 7′ or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Flame Grass is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for the best overall performance and foliage density and coloration. Flame Grass prefers more moisture than other Miscanthus varieties. That said, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.
