A pink leaved Podocarpus? Yep…meet ‘Emerald Flame’. Not all the leaves are pink but whenever Emerald Flame flushes new growth during the season, which is from spring well into fall, they are a striking bright pink! These new leaves mature to a deep green that then serves as the perfect backdrop to show off the next flush of pink new growth. New growth flushes several time through the season from spring to fall. To see Emerald Flame covered in this bright pink new growth is a site to behold!
Note: We’ve had this shrub growing in our own gardens for such a short period of time that we’re not really sure about its long term growth habit, form and size. We know it’s from Japan. One online source says it grows more upright to about 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 feet wide. A different source says it’s more bushy and spreading than upright. Based on its appearance, we think it’s more upright in habit. Either way, we love the look of this new cultivar and the unique texture and color it provides in the garden , We will update this page when we find more information.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Emerald Flame Podocarpus is such a unique plant that we suggest using it in design as a focal point specimen in the ground or in pots.

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Podocarpus is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers which can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Podocarpus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun or part shade. It does not like a poorly drained constantly soggy or wet soil and is very drought and heat tolerant when established. Plants can be trimmed occasionally for shaping purposes. Cease pruning two months prior to the average first-frost date in your area.
